Man on e-bike struck and killed by truck in Toronto

A 39-year-old man is dead after he was hit by a truck that was attempting to turn into a construction site in Toronto on Tuesday afternoon, police say.
Toronto police said emergency crews were called to the area of Avenue Road and Elgin Avenue, north of Bloor Street West, at 1:23 p.m.
Insp. Jeff Bangild told reporters that a flatbed truck was travelling south on Avenue Road and was looking to turn into a construction site on the east side of Avenue Road.
At least one construction worker stopped northbound traffic in order to facilitate that turn, while the truck waited in the curb lane, Banglid said.
The victim, who was riding an e-bike at the time, was positioned on the driver’s side of the truck and when the driver began turning into the construction site, the cyclist was struck, Banglid said.
“When the truck began their turn, they were essentially cutting in front of that bicycle, thereby striking them,” Banglid said.
The truck driver immediately stopped and emergency crews were called to the scene, he said.
The victim was taken to a trauma centre nearby and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Banglid said the truck driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation, which is ongoing.
“We have our traffic services unit here to reconstruct the collision, as well as to collect evidence from the truck itself and the scene to determine what happened and make a determination if charges are warranted,” Banglid said.
Banglid said investigators will be looking to see if the cyclist was in the truck driver’s blind spot at the time of the collision.
It’s not clear if the cyclist was in motion at the time.
“There’s no evidence in any way at this point to suggest who’s at fault or what actions caused what. It is truly in the infancy of its investigation,” Banglid said.
He added that witnesses have provided videos from the area that have been helpful for investigators.
Anyone with information on the incident was asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
